Health Literacy: A Cornerstone for Better Healthcare

Abstract
An increase in health literacy has not accompanied the improvement in access to healthcare over the past decades. Several studies show that higher health literacy reduces the overuse of healthcare services, especially hospital emergency services.
The transmission of health knowledge should be carried out through mass media, including television, the Internet, and social networks, and Portugal can follow some communication models already used in other countries.
