Artificial Intelligence: Technology and Patient-Centered Care in Family Medicine
Main Article Content
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been transforming General Practice/Family Medicine, with applications in diagnostic support, treatments, and the automation of administrative tasks, contributing to greater efficiency and reducing the non-clinical workload of physicians.
However, the integration of AI requires an ethical and critical approach that safeguards clinical judgment, equity of access, data protection, and the humanization of care, ensuring that technology complements, rather than replaces, the doctor-patient relationship.
Family Medicine, due to its core characteristics as defined by World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA), person-centred care, continuity, comprehensiveness, coordination, and contextual decision-making, presents a unique clinical environment where AI can have considerable impact.
