Abstract

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disease that affects mainly patients over 50 years of age. The diagnosis is primarily clinical and is supported by elevated inflammatory markers. We describe a case of a 76-year-old woman with bilateral, inflammatory pain of the hip and shoulder girdles, with four months of evolution. During this period, she was observed in several consultations in primary and secondary health care. Given the clinical presentation suggestive of PMR, supported by elevated inflammatory markers, Prednisolone 20 mg/day was initiated, resulting in complete resolution of symptoms and normalization of inflammatory markers within two weeks. The high clinical suspicion allowed for adequate treatment, significant improvement in quality of life and prompt referral to specialist care.
